Description: Lysine is an essential amino acid that must be obtained in one's diet, as the body cannot manufacture enough of it (gut bacteria synthesize small amounts of lysine). It is found in chicken, cottage cheese, avocados, and wheat germ. It is involved in the growth of children and in bone formation. It is most commonly used as a supplement to prevent and treat herpes outbreaks.

Indications:

  • Cold sores
  • Genital herpes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Shingles

Precautions: High dosages may cause digestive upset.

Dosage: Take 1,500 to 3,000 mg for the treatment of acute herpes outbreaks and 500 to 1,000 mg to prevent herpes outbreaks.
