Laundry Detergents
By Dr. Alan Greene
  • Naturally Yours ( offers laundry detergent that contains no phosphates, which go down the drain and into the ocean, where they are known to kill aquatic life. All of this company’s packaging is eco-responsible.
  • Seventh Generation sells laundry detergent that is vegetable based. It is also nontoxic and does not contain chlorine, phosphates, and artificial fragrances or dyes. You can find this detergent in many stores or at (On a personal note, I particularly like this company’s Liquid Laundry Detergent for Baby. It’s gentle, fragrance free, and produces excellent results.)
  • Method also sells a baby laundry detergent that contains no phosphates, is biodegradable, and is not tested on animals. Find Method at larger independent grocery stores, or go to
If you use one of these eco-detergents, your washing machine can be a great source of recycled “gray” water for the yard. Just snake a drain hose from the washer through the dryer vent and into a storage barrel. You can fit an adapter for a garden hose at the bottom, and drip water on your flowers. Your plants should enjoy the nutrients, and you’ll save hundreds of gallons a year—this is kind to your water bill and to the environment.
