Recycling Guidelines for Glass

Most glass products can be recycled. By 2006 Americans recycled 25% of the glass waste we produced. Manufacturing glass products out of recycled glass is cheaper and requires less energy than using primarily raw materials. By continuing to recycle glass, especially food and beverage containers, we save valuable resources and cut down on harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

What Can You Recycle?

  • Glass bottles

  • Glass jars

  • Any glass items other than bottles and jars - mirrors, light bulbs, ceramics, glassware etc.

Useful Tips for Recycling Glass

  • Empty and rinse containers before recycling. Place all together in clear bags, or in any bin labeled with blue recycling decals or marked "Bottles & Cans."

  • Remove caps and lids. Place metal caps and lids in the recycling bin, and put plastic caps and lids in the garbage.

  • Glass Packaging Institute - Database of glass recyclers
