Smart Growth
According to the EPA, "'Smart growth' covers a range of development and conservation strategies that help protect our natural environment and make our communities more attractive, economically stronger, and more socially diverse." It is a strategic way to plan urban development that creates sustainable communities and minimizes negative environmental impact.

Smart growth considers how to yield affordable, convenient, and accessible resources to communities and how to help those communities develop in a more green way. For example, as a community builds more housing for its members, utilizing the idea of smart growth would ensure that that housing is energy efficient. It would also consider how conveniently located a house is to schools and other necessary resources so as to minimize the effects of frequent driving. This concept also helps urban planners utilize a limited amount of land in the most efficient way possible.
