Osteopathic Medicine
By James F. Balch, M.D. and Mark Stengler, N.D.

Osteopathy or osteopathic medicine is a system of medicine based on the premise that the bone structure (the spine and the extremities) is related to the internal health of the body. Osteopathic doctors may use spinal manipulation (osteopathic manipulative treatment) to help patients with musculoskeletal and systemic disorders. They are also trained in drugs and surgery, and they practice as primary-care doctors.
