As we mentioned, fish are an excellent source of protein and essential fatty acids. Unfortunately, certain species of fish are known to contain dangerous levels of mercury and other toxins. The following boxed text lists fish that are deemed to be safe from mercury and those that are considered borderline or unsafe. The quality and the safety of fish depend on the area where you live. You can check the status of the contamination of fish in your area at the government Web site,, or contact your local state department.
